St Peters Quarter Live – Entertainment Special

St Peters Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) has organised a day of street entertainment on Saturday May 30 at St Peter’s Cross in the heart of the area to launch its summer programme.

The busy crossroads at the junction of St Peter’s Churchyard, East Street and St Peter’s Street underwent a £1 million face-lift last summer. It has since grown in stature as a popular performance space with ambient lighting and new seating for visitors to St Peters Quarter to relax.

St Peters Quarter is the retail core of the city between the Cathedral Quarter and Intu Derby shopping centre.

The BID, spearheaded by local businesses, has teamed up with Derby arts promoters Furthest from the Sea to showcase the best of local and regional talent for the day’s entertainment, compered by ‘Dapper Dan’ Webber.

The line-up includes Arjana Dance, an award winning Oriental Dance troupe based in Derby, led and choreographed by professional dancer Diana Mehira.

High Vis Theatre comedy street theatre company will entertain visitors with their animated interactive walkabout show.

The comedy continues courtesy of Rusty B, a member of Derby-based socio band The Weasel Kickers, who will bring his own brand of folk, rock and pop to St Peter’s Cross.

Also on stage will be rock and rock trio Lucille who have recently signed with Hoodwink records and have released their debut album ‘The Sounds of Lucille’.

Finally vintage vocalist Rebecca Jayne will take the audience back in time with some war-time classics, music hall melodies and swing tunes.

Stephen Jeffery, chair of St Peters Quarter Board, which drives through activities under the area’s Business Improvement District status, said: “The regeneration work at St Peter’s Cross has brought a renewed vibrancy to the area and created a focal point that is an attractive area for visitors to enjoy.

“One of the key objectives for the BID is to improve the visitor experience in the area and encourage more people back into St Peters Quarter which is the traditional high street of the city centre.

“Street entertainment is an important part of this work – animating the street and creating a fun festival atmosphere.

“We held a very successful day of entertainment in September to mark the completion of regeneration work on St Peter’s Cross and Saturday’s line up looks to be just an enjoyable.

“It will mark the start of our summer programme which will see regular and diverse street entertainment at St Peter’s Cross and elsewhere in the area.”

Dan Webber from Furthest From the Sea added: “We are delighted to be working with St Peters Quarter to showcase some great local talent.

“St Peter’s Cross is a wonderful performance space and is a very busy junction in this bustling part of the city centre so we are looking forward to entertaining and interacting with the crowds on what I am sure will be a great day.”
