Futuristic Mural Takes Shape in St Peters Quarter

Organisers of a giant mural depicting what part of St PetersQuarter could look like in 100 years’ time are appealing for more volunteers tohelp complete the project.

The 100 sq metre mural at the bottom of Green Lane is thebrainchild of local business owner Martin Shooter who owns comic shop Cape& Cowl.  He has teamed up with localartists Aaron Murphy and Diane Bechmann to create the design on the blank wallopposite his shop.

Art and Design students from Derby College have been workingon the mural as part of their course but more people are needed to complete thedesign.

The project has been supported by St Peters Quarter BusinessImprovement District and sponsored to cover the cost of materials by Reams artsupplies in St Peter’s Churchyard, Central United Reformed Church, Westfieldand Eurovia Contracting – who are handling the refurbishment of the nearby StPeter’s Cross on behalf of Derby City Council.

Martin Shooter explained: “A group of us decided to spruce upthe rather unattractive blank wall opposite my shop in Green Lane and got intouch with Aaron and Diana who have come up with the futuristic concept.

“They have both been working on it whenever they can and theDerby College students have done a great job driving the project forward sothat about a third of it is now completed.

“We could really do with more volunteers now to get thiscompleted to create an attractive entrance to Green Lane.”

Aaron Murphy, a former Derby College Art & Design studentwho now works in IT, added: “The mural has certainly been a talking point forpassers-by in Green Lane who are interested in what we are doing and why.

“I wanted to get involved to play my part in improving thelocal environment in this great part of the city centre and I think this willbe stunning when it is completed.”

Stephen Jeffery, Board chair of St Peters Quarter, whichdrives forward activities under the area’s Business Improvement Districtstatus, said: “This creative work has come at an ideal time for Green Lanewhich, as well as the surrounding Lanes area, is due to get a significantfacelift under the City Council’s Townscape Heritage Initiative.

“The great thing about St Peters Quarter’s status as aBusiness Improvement District is that it has brought together businesses toidentify and action projects to change the area for the better and this hasbeen a great idea to improve a physical environment in Green Lane.

“The BID is fully behind the project and have helped to find sponsorshipto cover the costs of materials.  I hopethat more volunteers will now support it and add their mark to this creativedesign.”

Among the Derby College students who have been working on themural is Nikki Wright (16) from Derby who said: “It has been great to work on alive project and get work experience as part of our course.

“The design is stunning and every time I walk past this Iwill know that I have played a part in bringing this to life.”
