Safer Neighbourhood Day

SPQ logoAs part of the BID's programme to improve the sharing of crime related intelligence, the third St Peters Quarter Neighbourhood Day took place last week.

Officers from the City's Safer Neighbourhood Team accompanied BID Rangers visiting  around 40 local businesses. The event completed the Safer Neighbourhood Day programme for 2014 but further days are planned for next year.

Reminder: businesses are asked to report non-emergency incidents on 101 (emergency 999).

New Powers for the local Police Safer Neighbourhood Team

derbyshire police logoNew powers have been provided to the City Safer Neighbourhood Team have been granted new powers to enable officers to disperse people who they believe might be planning to commit crime or disorder, or who are  behaving  anti-socially.
Previously, dispersal orders were targeted at alcohol-related crime, disorder or anti-social behaviour.

The new powers can be used to stop any antisocial behaviour or crime - not just that linked to alcohol. Children aged 16 or under can be removed to their home address or a place of safety, and anyone moved on under the powers can be prohibited from going back there for a certain period of time.

The local police sergeant will be updating the St Peters Quarter Exchange Street Business Watch meeting on the potential impact of these changes at the Watch's  launch event this Thursday (30th), at Lee Longlands.

A group of young dancers joined a wide range of business fromacross Derby’s St Peters Quarter to collect litter and tidy up the localstreets.

Local youngsters Annie Roberts (13), Eden Wilson (14), BethGroves (16) and Izzie Torrance picture (left to right) with Principal EllieWalker (centre) are members of DanceTek School of Dance in Green Lane.

They joined representatives from other local businesses TescoMetro, Barclays, McDonalds, NCP, G Wathall and Son funeral directors andCentral United Reformed Church who worked alongside Derby City Council’sStreetpride team for the early morning clean up.

“People really do need to think more about what they drop onthe streets and appreciate the work that others have to do to clear up afterthem.”

Chris Berry, store manager at Tesco Metro in St Peter’sStreet added: “We appreciate how important it is to be part of a local businesscommunity and were delighted when we heard about this initiative.”

Barclays Operational Specialist Rebecca Thomas continued: “Thisis a real eye opener and makes you much more aware of what is left lying aboutin the streets.”

And Phil Jones, manager of McDonalds in St Peters Street whosponsored the event, concluded: “Our staff clear up outside the shop every 15minutes and further afield in the surrounding streets several times a day butit was good to join together with other local businesses to blitz the area.

“Streetpride do a sterling job but we all have aresponsibility to play our part in keeping the area clean and tidy to encouragemore people into St Peters Quarter and improve the visitor experience here.”
